Laboratory Unit Converter

Convert between units of volume, mass, length, area, time, temperature, pressure, frequency, concentration and electrical quantities, with the value in every unit.

Formula

result=value×factorfromfactorto\text{result} = \text{value}\times\dfrac{\text{factor}_{\text{from}}}{\text{factor}_{\text{to}}}
temperature: through kelvin, with the offsets\text{temperature: through kelvin, with the offsets}
factor\text{factor}
the number of base units (litres, grams, metres, seconds, pascals, hertz and so on) in one of the unit

How it works

Each family of units has a base unit, and every unit is stored as a factor relative to it. Converting multiplies the value by the factor of the unit converted from and divides by the factor of the unit converted to; temperatures add their offsets.

Concentration by mass and by amount of substance cannot be converted without the molecular weight, which the Concentration Converter takes. Only conversions within one quantity are offered here, which prevents nonsense conversions such as a volume to a mass.

Worked example

Convert 1 mL to microlitres.

  1. 1 mL = 0.001 L and 1 µL = 10⁻⁶ L.
  2. 1 × 0.001 / 10⁻⁶ = 1,000.

1 mL is 1,000 µL.

These are the values the calculator opens with, so you can check its output against this example.

Assumptions

  • Factors are exact definitions (SI prefixes, the litre, the atmosphere, the inch) or conventional values stated to the precision shown.
  • Mass and amount concentrations are separate families.

Common mistakes

  • Expecting a mass to convert to a volume without a density.
  • Mixing a prefix (milli, micro) with the wrong power of ten.
  • Converting a temperature difference as if it were a temperature.
