Patient warming equipment ranges from forced-air convective warmers to fluid/blood warmers, and both carry real, specific safety considerations beyond general electrical safety testing.

Forced-air warmer filter and hose concerns

Forced-air warming systems have been the subject of real, documented FDA safety communications around filter and hose contamination and airflow-related infection-control questions, particularly discussed in the context of orthopedic surgery. Regardless of where the broader clinical debate on this topic has landed in the literature, filter integrity and hose-connector condition are legitimate, concrete PM checkpoints for this equipment - not optional ones, and not something to skip because the underlying clinical question is still debated. A degraded filter or a compromised hose connection is a real, checkable maintenance item independent of that broader discussion.

Fluid and blood warmer over-temperature protection

Fluid and blood warmers carry a real over-temperature risk if their thermal cutoff fails - infused fluid that's too hot can cause direct tissue damage, and blood product overheated beyond safe limits can hemolyze. Temperature-accuracy verification against a calibrated reference thermometer is the single PM check that most directly prevents a burn or product-damage injury on this equipment, and it's never skipped to save time regardless of schedule pressure - this is functionally the warming department's equivalent of the ventilator disconnect alarm or the ESU return-electrode check: the one check with the most direct line to a preventable patient injury.

Connector and hose wear

Hose and blanket connector wear is the most common real fault across forced-air systems and, because it's a small component relative to the whole unit, it's also the easiest to miss on a quick visual check that focuses on the main console. Inspect the connector seal specifically at every PM, not just the blanket or hose in isolation - a worn connector seal reduces delivered airflow and warming effectiveness well before it becomes an obvious, visible failure.
