Recall & Hazard Alert Response
The full recall response sequence, FDA recall classification in detail, and who owns the process at a facility.
When a manufacturer or the FDA issues a recall or safety communication - see the FDA Updates tab on this site for the live feed - the standard response sequence is methodical and time-sensitive, because the whole point of a recall is that a known, real hazard has been identified in equipment that may currently be in patient use.
The response sequence
- Identify every affected unit in your inventory by model and serial/lot number - not just "do we have this model," the specific affected lots matter, since many recalls affect only a subset of units built with a particular component batch or during a particular manufacturing window.
- Assess the recall classification to set urgency: Class I means a reasonable probability of serious harm or death and demands immediate action; Class II means temporary or reversible harm; Class III means the violation is unlikely to cause harm but still requires correction.
- Follow the manufacturer's stated corrective action exactly - a field correction, a software update, or a full retrieval - rather than an ad-hoc workaround your own team might devise, since the manufacturer's corrective action is what was actually reviewed and accepted by the regulator.
- Document the response per unit and close the loop with whoever owns recall management at your facility - often risk management or supply chain, not biomed alone, since a full response typically also involves notifying clinical departments that used the affected equipment.
Recall vs. safety communication vs. field correction
These terms overlap but aren't identical: a formal recall is a specific regulatory action; a safety communication is broader guidance that may not involve removing or correcting specific units; a field correction is a repair, adjustment, or inspection performed at the customer's location rather than a full retrieval. Reading which category a given notice falls into tells you what kind of response is actually expected.
