Ophthalmology equipment works at a scale - the eye's optical structures - where both mechanical precision and optical/laser safety carry unusually direct consequences for a very sensitive organ, which shapes how this department's service standards differ from general biomed practice.

Laser safety classes and interlocks

Ophthalmic lasers (YAG, argon, femtosecond) are typically Class 3B or Class 4 - genuine eye and skin hazard classes under the laser safety classification system, not low-power diagnostic beams. Their safety interlocks - door/curtain interlocks, key switches, emission indicators - are never defeated for convenience, and laser output itself is verified with a real power meter, not the unit's own display, since the display can drift independently of true output and a display that reads correctly is not proof the actual emitted power matches it.

Phacoemulsification systems

Phacoemulsification ("phaco") systems use an ultrasonically-driven handpiece to fragment lens material during cataract surgery, one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures overall. Handpiece tuning - matching the handpiece's resonant frequency to the driving electronics - is a real, device-specific calibration step performed before each procedure or on a defined schedule; a mistuned handpiece both underperforms at fragmenting tissue and runs measurably hotter than intended, which creates a real thermal-injury risk to surrounding ocular tissue.

Slit lamps and tonometers

These need routine optical alignment and calibration checks - tonometers specifically measure intraocular pressure and are calibrated against a known reference weight or test block, since a mis-calibrated tonometer can either miss a genuinely elevated pressure (a glaucoma risk indicator) or produce false-positive readings that lead to unnecessary follow-up. Drift here is usually gradual and reported as "the reading looks a little off," which is worth taking seriously rather than dismissing as subjective, matching the broader principle from the general chapters that gradual drift reports are an early-warning signal, not noise.
